If a boat gets lifted out, you can stop paying a Canal & River Trust license fee. But of course you have to "park" on land, somewhere, which has a cost.

How is mooring priced with the kind of ocean marinas you use?

I was looking at the invoice for my mooring fees.

It's a price per foot per day.

Sometimes it makes sense that boats pay by the foot, like for blacking (painting) the hull. Or for insurance, … maybe.

But in other cases it doesn't make sense to me.

I'm not entirely sure that licensing a boat should be priced by the foot.

A duck alarm quacks like crazy and moves away, because when they're that alarmed, a duck will flee.

Geese are so much worse. Geese, the silly things, set each other off. In the shortest time they'll completely forget what the original alarm was about and just carry on honking at each other.

Meanwhile, you can forget about sleep. Keep in mind this csn be just a few meters from the cabin, AND sound carries oh so well over water.

It took uncounted, enjoyable hours.

The exterior, furnishings, and hardware is from scratch. For a few things I started from a sample photo, and then adjusted, nudged, extruded, and shaded it—all the things Photoshop is good for.

To get the rugs, I photographed a quarter/corner of each rug, keystoned (or unskewed) those into rectangles, and finally copied and flipped it 4× to get a whole rug.

In colour it looks gorgeous, but colour felt too invasive of my privacy.

The dehumidifier seems to make a difference of several degrees. I haven't done a controlled experiment, but since the air it expels is warmer than the air in the cabin, I believe that it heats the space a bit.

When I designed the boat, I painstakingly mocked up the outside and the inside, using Photoshop. (Yes, that's nerdy.)

As the boat evolved, I updated the interiors and exteriors in the design file to reflect every as-built and as-furnished detail.

Now, I've printed the updated image, and plastic-laminated it to withstand touching it as people point out details. Framed, it'll hang on a bulkhead (wall), in the boat.

It was 8°C or 46°F in the boat with no heat running, but with the dehumidifier running intermittently. (The dehumidifier emits slightly warmer air.)

That's not an unreasonable temperature. It only takes a bit of heating, and 2 hours, to get to a comfortable temperature.

You don't have to use that website to book. Once you have the company names, you can search for their individual websites. But I always used that website before I bought a boat.

Just renewed the license with Canal and River Trust. £1,400.

Ouch. I'd have to check my records, because is that really be a 20% increase over 3 years? If so, it exceeds inflation.

As a boater, I'm dependent on a folding bicycle, and on buses and trains.

Over the past 3 years, on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, the Lancaster canal, and the Bridgewater canal, I found rail service to be exceptional, in frequency, and reasonable in price (except from Wigan to Manchester, but perhaps that was just one-time bad luck).

🕯️ A candle gives both light and heat—not overly much of either. But there's another benefit, since heat rises. When the candle is low to the floor, it sets up a convection current which mixes the temperature zones from floor to ceiling.

The boat is always several degrees cooler at the floor. (The heat-powered fan on the wood stove points sideways, not down.)

Often, I'm comfy but with chilly feet.

I am not familiar with the Morning Star videos, but, hey, watching other people's videos about their boating would be like watching other people's videos about their driving or their kitchening or their laundering. 🤣
